Oak Bay Baptist Church History Oak Bay Baptist Church was begun in 1992 by a group of older people from the San Juan Baptist Church Missions Committee. For several years they met at Dale Goddard’s home on Old Oak Bay Road. In 1996 the group purchased 4.3 acres of land on Oak Bay Road and the mission was incorporated as Oak Bay Baptist Church. Bob Campbell was called as the first pastor in 1999. Construction of the church building began in the spring of 2001. By that time the founding members were ages 60-91 and began construction work. They believed the Lord would provide and indeed He did. A visiting truck driver from Texas passed by the building site and stopped and asked if the little church would need some help. He returned home to Redwater, Texas, and sent two different teams of men to work on the construction. In the Providence of God, there was not a single day of rain during the visits of the two teams of men working on the building. Southern Baptists also supplied a special trailer loaded with all necessary tools and generator for power tools. November 4, 2001 150 people attended the dedication service of the new little church. The Baptist Student Mission from Texarkana, Texas, came in the spring of 2002 to help in an outreach to the children of the community. In April, 2002, the pastor resigned for health reasons and Gregory DeJarnette became the second pastor. He served in that capacity until November, 2004. The Lord continues to bless Oak Bay Baptist Church as it seeks to teach the Word of God faithfully and to worship Christ “in spirit and in truth,” as He instructed. The church reaches out to the community and seeks to minister to families, encouraging particularly the homeschool community among us. Dr. William Burnside is the current pastor. The church publishes a newsletter regularly dealing with pressing issues for the Christian community. |
